Notes on “Cabling for CF Failover: Bringing up the HA Pair for the First Time”

*This is for older FAS systems that had FC shelves, the information is useful if you’ve taken the system down for re-cabling etc.

After cabling the nodes and storage together, connect the storage systems to the network.

1. Power on disk shelves:
- Wait at least 5 minutes for the electronics to complete initialization!
Note 1: DS14 shelves take as short as 30 seconds
Note 2: SAS shelves with SATA drives can take 3 minutes or more

2. Turn on both power supplies to one node. At “Press Del to abort boot, ESC to skip Post” hit the <DEL> key to abort the boot. Repeat for the other node so that both are at the command prompt.

3. At CFE> or LOADER-A> run boot_diags
At OK> run sys-diag
Note: You can run diagnostics only when one partner is down or halted or the interconnect cables are disconnected.

4. Select the diagnostics tests that check all dual-port FC-AL adapters and the cluster interconnect.

5. After diagnostics are complete, use the exit command at the diags prompt to exit.

6. Interrupt the reboot by pressing Ctrl-C to access the menu and then select Maintenance Mode (option 5).

i. Use the command fcadmin config to check the FC port settings.
ii. Use one or both commands, fcadmin device_map or sasadmin shelf, to verify that all shelves are visible to both controllers.
iii. Use the disk show -a command to show all current disk assignments.
iv. Use the storage show disk -p command to verify that the MPHA cabling is correct.
v. Use the aggr status command to ensure that the system has a root aggregate.

7. Exit maintenance mode and boot the Data ONTAP operating system by typing boot at the OK> prompt, or from the CFE> prompt, boot_primary, or boot_ontap.

8. When the system boots, you are placed in setup
