A place to record some links on:
Project: MetroCluster IP (MCIP) ARL Head Swap A400 to A900 on 9.11.1
- This is not possible!
There are only 2 supported ways to "head swap" a 4-node A400 to make it a 4-node A900.
1) The Tech Refresh: Where you have new A900 nodes and disk shelves, and add them to the 4-node MCIP, to make it an 8-node MCIP. Then vol move from A400 aggregates to A900 aggregates. Finally decommission the A400 nodes to make it a 4-node MCIP again.
2) In ONTAP 9.13.1 you can use the switchover/switchback method to headswap A400 with A900, and this doesn't need any new disk shelves (you keep the disk shelves from the original A400.)
Documentary proof:
1) Tech Refresh:
Based on the above findings, the plan changed to:
Project: MetroCluster IP (MCIP) ARL Head Swap A400 to A900 on 9.13.1
From 2 above, we get the supported procedure for A400 to A900 head swap, which is:
Then, due to the youth of 9.13.1, and the time it would take to get to 9.13.1 P3 say, the plan changed again:
Project: Get off an MCIP A400 to a cluster of A900s with loan shelves
1) Stand up new A900 cluster with loan shelves in DC1. Storage vMotion VMs from DC2-MC to DC1-CLU.
DC2-MC <---> DC1-MC
DC1-CLU (A900HA x 1)
2) Kill DC2-MC (halt it and no switchover). Take the switches and shelves, and use those to expand DC1-CLU to 4 nodes of A900. Storage vMotion VMs from DC1-MC to the 2nd A900 HA-pair.
DC1-MC
DC1-CLU (A900HA x 4)
3) Kill DC1-MC (the MC is now dead) add those shelves to DC1-CLU 1st HA-pair. Vol move / Storage vMotion off the loan disk (including root vol), and hot remove the loan shelves.
DC1-CLU (A900HA x 4)
