ONTAP Select Upgrade 9.4 to 9.11.1

I'm tasked with upgrading some ONTAP Select HA cluster from 9.4 / 9.4P1 to 9.11.1. The models are FDvM300.

One problem is that there is no ActiveIQ Upgrade Advisor to assist.

Lets look at the documentation for 9.11.1:

Looking at the release notes for 9.11.1 here:

I see that Deploy 2.8 had ONTAP Select 9.4 and Deploy 2.9 had ONTAP Select 9.4P1.

The ONTAP Select Deploy upgrade path is:

2.8 > 2.9 > 2.11 > 9.7 > 9.9.1 > 9.11.1 (5 hops)

2.9 > 2.11 > 9.7 > 9.9.1 > 9.11.1 (4 hops)

From the documentation here:

Upgrade the ONTAP Select nodes (netapp.com)

We are told: 

"You cannot use the Deploy administration utility to perform upgrades of existing ONTAP Select nodes. The Deploy utility can only be used to create new ONTAP Select clusters."

General procedure

At a high level, you should use the following steps to upgrade an existing ONTAP Select node.

1) Navigate to downloads page at the NetApp Support Site.

2) Click ONTAP Select Node Upgrade.

3) Select and download the appropriate upgrade image responding to all prompts as needed.

Review the Release Notes for additional information and any required procedures before upgrading an ONTAP Select node.

4) Upgrade the ONTAP Select node using the standard ONTAP upgrade procedures with the ONTAP Select upgrade file.

When we go to the ONTAP Select Node Upgrade here -

- there are only certain versions of ONTAP Select to upgrade to (> 9.4). Which means our ONTAP Select Path is looking like this:

9.4 / 9.4P1 -> 9.5P19 -> 9.7P23 -> 9.9.1P18 -> 9.11.1P13 (4-hops)

Note: I did try searching for P-releases that weren't showing in the drop down without success for some of the older version - like 9.4 and 9.5. I could get other P-releases of 9.7 though.

So it looks like our upgrade process will be:

  1. Upgrade ONTAP Deploy 2.8 > 2.9 (1 instance)
  2. Upgrade ONTAP Deploy 2.9 > 2.11 (2 instances)
  3. Upgrade ONTAP from 9.4/9.4P1 -> 9.5P19 (2 clusters)
  4. Upgrade ONTAP Deploy from 2.11 > 9.7 (2 instances)
  5. Upgrade ONTAP from 9.5P19 -> 9.7P23 (2 clusters)
  6. Upgrade ONTAP Deploy from 9.7 to 9.9.1 (2 instances)
  7. Upgrade ONTAP from 9.7P23 -> 9.9.1P18 (2 clusters)
  8. Upgrade ONTAP Deploy from 9.9.1 to 9.11.1 (2 instances)
  9. Upgrade ONTAP from 9.9.1P18 -> 9.11.1P13 (2 clusters)
Optional we can get the 9.11.1P13 image installed into ONTAP Deploy (so we deploy new ONTAP Selects on that version if needed.)

Things required:
  • Download all ONTAP Deploy images
  • Download all ONTAP Select node upgrade images
  • Need an accessible HTTP server to serve the images to ONTAP.
Support for E1000 network  driver

This is taken from the 9.14.1 release notes.

Support for E1000 network driver
The VMXNET3 network driver is the default network driver for new cluster deployments. The E1000 network driver is still supported with the current product release; however, it is expected that E1000 will be deprecated in a future release.

So E1000 is still supported in 9.14.1 but might be deprecated eventually.

SVM-DR Migration from ONTAP Select 9.4

As per the below diagram, we can SVM-DR from 9.4 for migration purposes to maximum 9.7 or 9.8.
